Research Projects The international cooperation with leading experts and public institutions for maize breeding in the USA began in 1953. For the last 50 years, the cooperation has been intensifying with Universities (Iowa State, Minnesota State, North Carolina State, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, North Dakota), companies (Pioneer, Holden, Monsanto, Garst, Cargill, Wilson Seed), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The International Maize Training Centre for agronomists from developing countries was founded in 1978 and 266 agronomists from 63 countries from five continents participated in this Course till 1991. The MRI proposed and carried out several international projects for improvement of maize production and utilisation including Iran (1970-95), Angola (1979-86), Mozambique (1983-87), Nicaragua (1987-91), Zaire (1988-91), Zambia (1989-91). There is a joint project with the Slovak Republic on control of Western corn root worm (WCR) Diabrotica virgifera virgifera by an entomopathogenic fungus Balsamo. The MRI participated in many joint projects with USDA with the last one completed during the last decade. The MRI was a host of many international scientific and professional symposia and meetings; for instance, the XVIII International Conference on Maize and Sorghum Genetics and Breeding was organised in Belgrade in June 2000. The MRI is an active participant and donor in the European Maize Crop Network (ECP/GR - www.ecpgr.cgiar.org), i.e. a host of genetic resources of maize (European Maize Database - EMDb): http://www.mrizp.co.yu/emdb/default.htm
